About the Finish of our Wood Signs

Most people in the countryside and also many in town like the look of naturally faded oak for their wood signs. It is very durable but if exposed to the weather gradually turns to an attractive silver-grey colour. The paint work, if any, on the lettering or motif is equally durable but does not change colour. Though we recommend the 'natural' look It is possible for a small additional cost to put a finish on your sign of varnish with UV protection, but the sign will need further coats in future years to keep looking its best.

This is an example of a house sign after
many years' exposure to the weather.

Varnish keeps the sign brown
but will need maintainance.

Did you know?..............

There are two main species of oak found in this country –English or Pedunculate oak and Sessile oak. English oak is very common throughout Europe and  often grows with large irregular branches making it’s use as a timber more difficult but still in much demand because of it’s durability and strength. When surrounded by other tall trees or in a plantation Quercus robur will grow straighter and be extremely useful to the forester. The acorns are held on long stalks and this is the easiest way to tell the two species apart. Sessile oak Quercus petraea  holds it’s acorns, which are slightly smaller, with almost no stalks. Characteristically this species grows with a bole (trunk) that extends almost to the crown of the tree – a boon for the forester and woodworker.
