Did you know?..............
The style of lettering usually described as
‘Roman’ is derived from
inscriptions of the first century AD
and in particular the column erected by Emperor Ulpius Trajan
around AD114 – and therefore often described as Trajan letters. These
examples were all in capitals and did not include the letters H,
J, K, U, W, Y and Z so these
were drawn in a similar fashion to complete the alphabet. As
is well known Roman numerals were used so more modern
letter designers have adapted Arabic numerals -1,2,3 etc to the roman style
and incorporated lower-case letters to complement the capitals. There
are now countless variations used for the printed word but
when it comes to carved letters the original Trajan forms
are the most popular.
