Did you know?..............
Machines aren't always the most accurate ! When
arranging letters to be carved the practised human eye cannot be
bettered
– some letters needing to be
a little reduced in width or expanded to look right
next to the adjoining ones. Thus for example the letters LA
will naturally have more space between them than HI and this has
to be taken into consideration. Another factor is that
letters with curved tops and bottoms will look slightly smaller than
those with flat ones so the curves have to go
slightly beyond the line. This is even more marked where the letters
such as A and V come to a point
and to look correct this has to be taken a
little further above or below – an adjustment not usually
found except with hand-carving.
